Credit Card Fraud

3 Steps to Preventing Online Credit Card Fraud

Did you buy gifts online this holiday season? If so, then you may have put yourself at risk for credit card fraud. Having your credit card compromised is gut-wrenching – first you have to call your credit card and tell them what happened, and tell the merchant what happened – and hopefully get your money back. But, instead of going through this tedious process, you can prevent credit card fraud in 3 simple steps.

  1. Get a Virtual Credit or Debit Card
Many financial institutions offer virtual cards for shopping online. These ‘virtual’ cards are valid through your financial institution, but expire after a short amount of time – after your charges have gone through. Complete with security numbers, these virtual cards offer you the security of never having to give out your real credit card information online.
  2. Make Sure You Buy From Trusted Sites
When you buy from a store online, check the lower right hand of your browser for a closed lock symbol. This ensures that you’re on a secure buying site with valid security features.
  3. Mix it Up
When you shop online, you need to make sure you’re taking appropriate measures to protect your credit. This means not having the same user name and password for each site you shop with. If you do use the same user name and password for each site, then you’re opening yourself up to a host of trouble if someone gets that information. If your credit card information is stored in your favorite shopping site, then it will be easy for them to fraudulently charge your card in the places you frequent the most – without actually having your credit card information.

Overall, shopping on the internet is a safe and effective way to find goods and services – if you take the appropriate measures to protect your card. By mixing up your user names and passwords, buying from trusted sites, and using your institutions virtual card features, you’ll make it exponentially harder for thieves to find your financial information and exploit it.
