Viral Marketing also referred as viral advertising, refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to increase brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives, commonly used for product sales, through self-replicating viral processes, similar to the spread of other viruses. A professor from Harvard Business School, Jeffrey F. Rayport, coined the term Viral Marketing in December 1996 article The Virus of Marketing for Fast Company, a business magazine that features innovation in technology, digital media and social responsibility. Later in 1997, a venture capital firm based in California, DFJ (Draper Fisher Jurvetson), managing directors Tim Draper and Steve Juvetson popularized the term to describe the Hotmails’ e-mail practice of attaching advertising for itself in outgoing mail from their users.
